Advanced Placement Testing Requirements

All students who are enrolled in an AP course are required to take the corresponding AP exam for that course; and nothing is required of those students in terms of ordering an exam to take; the ordering is done by the school.

On rare occasion, a student desires to take an AP exam for a course he or she is not currently taking.  The school can sometimes accommodate that request, but that requires approval of the request by the school administration, written approval of the request by a parent of the student, and ordering of the exam by the school.

Because of the unique and valuable educational value to the student that comes with taking the AP course that prepares a student for the exam, as well as the resulting missed class time to take the exam, the school does not encourage students to take AP exams for courses in which they are not enrolled.  However, the school administration may grant permission for the student to take an AP exam for a course he or she is not currently taking only if one of the following conditions is met:
1.  The course for the requested AP exam is not offered at AMHS, and the student has undertaken preparation outside of Mitty for the AP exam.
2.  A student wants to improve his or her score on an exam already taken at AMHS as part of an AP course taken at AMHS (e.g., a student earned a score of 2 on his or her APUSH exam and would like to retake the exam in the junior year).
3.  The student is a senior and has an unavoidable scheduling conflict that does not allow him or her to take an AP course offered at AMHS (e.g., two requested courses are only offered during the same period in the student’s senior year).
4.  The student has completed a course of study through an outside educational institution or program for a language other than the language that he or she is currently taking at AMHS and that course of study has prepared the student to take the AP exam in that language.

Therefore, for any student who wishes to take an AP exam for a course in which he or she is not enrolled:  you must contact Ms. Lauren Matusich, AP Exam Coordinator (lmatusich@mitty.com),  to request that an exam be ordered for you.  The deadline for such requests is January 31, 2019.  After you contact Ms. Matusich, she will be in communication with the administration to authorize the ordering of an exam; and if authorization is granted, she will contact your parent(s) (since the cost of each exam is billed to your Mitty account).
