FAQs

When do students first receive their iPads?

New students receive their iPads during the first full week of August before school begins.

Is training available for students on how to use the iPads?

Yes. Training is embedded in the curriculum and new students receive more in depth orientation.

May students opt out of using the iPad altogether?

The short answer is no; the benefits of a tool like this can only be achieved if the tool is used by all students.

Can students install their own apps?

Apps will be pushed out to student iPads by the AMHS IT department in support of classroom instruction.

What accessories will be needed with the iPad?

All students will receive an iPad from Mitty. The school will supply information regarding any required or suggested accessories. All students will need earphones with a microphone. The digital booklist includes an icon indicating how to buy earphones.

Is there technical support for student iPads on campus?

Yes. An IT support staff member is available in the student library on campus at a walk-up window in the school Library to assist students with technical issues. Loaner iPads and batteries are available.

Do students get to keep their iPads when they graduate?

No, the iPads are the property of the Apple Computer and are returned to Apple after their use at AMHS.

My student already has an iPad. Will s/he be able to use that one?

No. The IT department at AMHS configures the iPads as "managed" devices to ensure we have consistent security, configuration, apps, and content.

What happens if an iPad gets broken, lost or stolen?

Archbishop Mitty High School is pleased to provide coverage for stolen or accidentally damaged iPads with an annual $40 fee. This coverage includes a single repair for accidental damage at no additional cost. Subsequent repairs for accidental damage are subject to a $50 service fee. Stolen iPads are subject to a $100 deductible and requires the successful filing of a police report. Lost iPads will be billed the full replacement price at the time of incident. To best protect the iPad and minimize the chance of damage, proper use of the AMHS supplied iPad case and front cover is required. Coverage applies to all iPads issued after April 2015.

Should parents purchase insurance to cover student use of the iPad?

Archbishop Mitty High School strongly encourages families to consider purchasing insurance. As stated in the Student iPad Acceptable Use Agreement, families are responsible for any damage or loss of the iPad. The replacement cost of an iPad is approximately $650.
A cracked screen is over $300. We encourage families to check their homeowner’s insurance policy to see if the device is covered or to consider purchasing a separate policy for the device.

Will students only being using digital books (ebooks)?

Not exclusively; paper books are still being used in some classes. AMHS uses the best materials for each learning environment. The academic department chairs, with the approval of the Administration, select materials for department instruction, including digital and hard copy books. Ebooks significantly reduce book costs to parents.

iPad Program Description and iPad Acceptable Use Policy

iPad Program Description and iPad Acceptable Use Policy

The iPad program at Archbishop Mitty High School provides tools and resources to the student. Effective teaching and learning with iPads integrates technology into the curriculum anytime, anyplace. Students must abide by the policies of the school to effectively use the iPad to enhance learning in the classroom and outside the classroom.

The policies, procedures, and information within this document apply to all iPads used at Archbishop Mitty High School. Teachers may set additional requirements for use in their respective classroom.

Above all, the iPad program at AMHS is an academic program and the policies governing the use of the iPad support its academic use.

A. iPad Distribution and Care

  1. Students are issued iPads at the beginning of the school year. The iPads are the property of AMHS and are loaned to students for their time at AMHS. Students are expected to use the iPads in conformity with the school's Acceptable Use Policy. Students are responsible for the general care of the iPad they have been issued by the school. iPads that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the IT Department for an evaluation of the equipment. The walk up window is in the library.

  2. Students and parents are solely responsible for the care and safekeeping of student iPads. Any loss or damage to iPads (outside of reasonable wear and tear), regardless of the cause, will be the strict financial responsibility of the students/parents. Students must immediately report damage or loss, including theft, to the Archbishop Mitty IT Department. Students/parents are not permitted to repair, alter, modify or replace iPads without express authorization from Archbishop Mitty.  Under no circumstance will Archbishop Mitty replace or repair a student iPad without the required payment from the student/parent.

  3. Archbishop Mitty High School strongly encourages families to consider purchasing insurance. As stated in the Student iPad Acceptable Use Agreement, families are responsible for any damage or loss of the iPad. The replacement cost of an iPad is approximately $150.
A cracked screen is over $150. We encourage families to check their homeowner’s insurance policy to see if the device is covered or to consider purchasing a separate policy for the device. There are several firms that provide insurance protection for your iPad.  While we do not endorse any one firm, here are two that come with good recommendations. Worth Avenue Group will cover accidental damage and loss due to theft.  Cost for two years is a little over $120. You can purchase this coverage here.

  1. Students must have their iPads, iPad covers, and earphones with them at school every day.
  2. Students are responsible for keeping their iPads’ batteries charged for school each day.
  3. Students may not remove or circumvent the management system installed on each iPad. This includes removing restrictions or “jailbreaking” the device.
  4. iPads should always be kept within the protective cases.
