Grading

Letter Grades

Letter grades indicate a student’s level of achievement on a particular assignment, test, or activity.  On the report card, letter grades indicate a student’s overall achievement in a particular subject. Each letter grade indicates a specific level of achievement.

Outstanding, a strong college recommending grade
B Good, a college recommending grade
C Satisfactory
D Unsatisfactory
F Fail, no credit (0 units)
I Incomplete (only for exceptional circumstance

A grade of “I” (incomplete) given at the semester report can only be made up to a passing grade within three (3) weeks after the end of the semester.  The Incomplete (I) will be changed to an “F” if work is not satisfactorily completed in this time period.

Note: The grade of “F” (Failure) will be given whenever a student fails to meet the minimum objectives of the course.

Honors/AP Grade Scale

Students enrolled a course with an honors or A.P. designation earn a higher grade point average based on different point values assigned for grades.  This system mirrors the University of California admissions grade point system.  This does not apply to courses deemed "accelerated."

Grade Point Average

Each student earns a grade-point-average in relation to the letter grades given on the student’s report card. A student’s report card indicates a student’s Total-Grade-Point-Average.  This average is calculated by summing all the points a student earned in a grading period and dividing that total by the total number of classes in which the student was enrolled.  This average has only one use. It is used in calculating a student’s eligibility for athletic participation.

In addition, each student earns an Academic-Grade-Point-Average that is calculated on the student’s transcript in the Registrar’s Office.  This Academic-Grade-Point-Average is an academic average that excludes physical development, student government, newspaper, Music Performance, Speech and Debate, Introduction to Robotics and yearbook grades. This average is calculated by summing all the points from individual courses a student earned in a grading period, excluding non-academic course points, and dividing that total by the total number of classes, excluding non-academic courses, in which the student was enrolled. This average is used in calculating a student’s academic rank in the student’s class at Archbishop Mitty. Colleges and universities also use the Academic-Grade-Point-Average in the admissions process.

Report Cards and OnCampus

AMHS uses two methods of reporting grades for students.

Teachers provide grade information on a semi-monthly basis through OnCampus the online grade reporting system. This information includes specifics on student grades such as homework assignments, quizzes, class participation, projects, and exams. Parents and students may review a student’s progress by consulting OnCampus. Teachers upload grades regularly during the school year (at least twice a month on the 1st and 15th). OnCampus may be accessed from Quick Links on the school's website.

Parents will create a unique login and password that will allow them to see grades for all of their students attending AMHS.  Student progress should be checked regularly by parents (we recommend twice a month) and questions or concerns about student progress should be directed to the students' teachers.

Report cards are posted at the conclusion of each quarter and each semester. Grades on the second and fourth report cards are the semester grades and are the basis on which credit for the semester’s work is determined.  Only semester grades appear on the transcripts. The first and third quarter report cards are considered formal student progress reports.

Report Card and transcripts may be printed from the school's Parent Portal. Posting dates for the 2018-2019 year are:

Quarter One: October 19, 2018 (report card only); Semester One: January 14, 2019 (report card and unofficial transcript); Quarter Three: March 15, 2019 (report card only); Semester Two: May 31, 2019 (report card and unofficial transcript)
