The Archbishop Mitty Outreach Program has worked diligently over the years to expand diverity on our school campus. We are proud to highlight not only a 4.5% African American population during the 2017-18 school year, but 27 African American members of the Class of 2018 will be nominated for recgonition by the Santa Clara County Alliance of Black Educators.
For five years now, the Archbishop Mitty Outreach Program has hosted, “I AM” Camp, a new and exciting educational opportunity for African American seventh graders (going into 8th grade in the Fall). In partnership with Jack and Jill of America, a non-profit organization focused on youth development, The Genesis Outreach Program will offer “I AM” Camp. Scheduled for the month of June, Bay Area African American students will be given the unique opportunity to cultivate pride, develop the necessary skills to be leaders, and be exposed to the possibility of higher education. This program will look to mirror the six years of success with the Romero Institute, the leadership program for high-achieving Latino students.
Each summer, students hear from Archbishop Mitty alumni regarding their own experiences in leadership, the professional world and beyond. Campers also had the opportunity to gain exposure to the characteristics and qualities of leaders, then participate in exercises to explore how they can develop those attributes within themselves. Activities for campers over the years have included participation in fun ice breakers, a visit to Santa Clara County Superior Court, hearing from guest speakers, a visit to the Museum of the African Diaspora and African American Shakespeare Theater (both located in San Francisco), a day at Great America, tours of Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Santa Clara University, and University of San Francisco. Students engaged in discussions with alumni of color and directly interact with Archbishop Mitty students who are actively involved with the on campus affinity group, African American Student Union (AASU).
The objectives of the I AM Camp are:
