  • Most courses are taught in 6-weeks at an accelerated pace.
  • Only one course may be taken. Daily Schedule: 8:00 a.m.- 12:00 noon including break from 9:50 a.m. - 10:10 a.m.  
  • 10 High School Credits are available for successful completion of a 6-week course.
  • A student who is taking an academic course for transcript credit may only miss one (1) day of class in a 3-week semester and must take the final exam(s).

English

Contemporary Authors- Rising 10th-12th Grade

Contemporary Authors is designed to review and practice skills taught in English 1 and 2. Emphasis is placed upon close-reading and reading comprehension; writing various types of responses and essays; learning and application of new vocabulary; polishing grammar and usage knowledge; and editing proficiency. This includes review and practice of MLA format in various writing assignments. The student will be reading and writing daily in class and for homework. Goals of the course are for students to improve as a reader and as a writer, and to become knowledgeable about the two novels (The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards and Still Alice by Lisa Genova) used as primary texts.

Introduction to College Preparatory English-Rising 9th Grade (Mitty Only)

Introduction to College Preparatory English is a one semester (3 week) course intended to benefit students in need of reading and writing skills improvement to ensure academic success in English 1.  Course work includes daily close reading, reading quizzes, class discussions, group activities, and short-writing assignments on literary elements and issues within the Summer Reading novel.  Writing strategies are taught sequentially beginning with diagnostic interviews, short paragraph writing, and finally a short essay that assesses the organization and development of written expression.

Prerequisite: Acceptance to Archbishop Mitty Class of 2022

Course is classified as an Enrichment Course.  Students may not earn high school credit for course.

Mathematics

Pre-algebra is designed to prepare students to enter the college-preparatory algebra sequence that begins with Algebra 1 and advances into higher-level math courses.  Basic math skills, such as multistep problem solving, analyzing word problems, and language relating to mathematics are reviewed and reinforced.  Additionally, students are introduced to variables, expression, equations and mathematical properties to develop necessary problem solving and critical thinking skills emphasized in Algebra 1.

Algebra 1 is designed to build a foundation of algebraic proficiencies, to improve computational skills, to develop problem-solving ability, and to generate a positive attitude towards mathematics.  Problem solving is taught in a strategic fashion to ensure students master fundamental algebra skills and concepts.  Linear equations, quadratic equations, and inequalities are graphed and used for solving word problems.

Geometry- Rising 9th-11th Grade

Geometry teaches the properties and relationships of points, lines, and planes for both two and three-dimensional figures and their applications to area, volume, and proportion. It includes an introduction to analytic geometry, a study of the structure of logic and deductive, inductive and intuitive reasoning, and the development of proof and construction. Understanding the relationship between geometry and algebra, and how geometry assists algebra in developing solutions to problems are expected outcomes as well.

Algebra 2 will review and extend concepts learned in Algebra 1. New topics include complex numbers, polynomial functions, analytic geometry, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series, and development of problem solving skills.

Trigonometry is a 3-week (5 high school credit) course designed to prepare students to succeed at higher-level mathematics studied in pre-calculus, calculus and physics. Study of problems involving angles, triangles and objects that move in circular motion, or orbits are undertaken.  Additional topics include angle measure in degrees and radians, trigonometric and circular functions and their graphs, right triangles, oblique triangles, inverse trigonometric functions and vectors.
Students should select and register for only one of the two sessions offered.

Biology teaches life science principles as powerful conceptual tools to make sense of the complexity, diversity and interconnectedness of life on Earth.  Students engage in laboratory and authentic learning experiences that encourage the application of biological knowledge for the purpose of making personal decisions and solving problems in an evolving global 21st century community.  Development of mathematical and analytical skills in this course support and prepare students as knowledge seekers capable of analyzing scientific data collected from hands-on instructional activities.

Chemistry teaches the composition of matter and the changes in composition that matter can undergo.  In investigating the composition of matter, the structure of the atom and the changes the atom undergoes in the formation of new substances will be explored.  As a traditional chemistry class, emphasis is given to topics that form the basis for college-level courses as well as provide general chemistry knowledge in everyday experiences.  Problem-solving and critical-thinking skills along with the quantitative investigation of matter and its changes are the basis for this course, and prepares students to study other fundamental sciences such as physics and environmental science.

World Language

Introduction to Spanish- Rising 7th-9th Grade

In this enrichment class, students begin the study of the Spanish language to help them acclimate to a Spanish-speaking classroom environment.  Students are introduced to pronunciation, basic greetings, and useful and fun vocabulary by AMHS World Language Faculty. Emphasis is placed on developing communication skills with the goal that students acquire some basic language skills and gain confidence in using a new language.

Spanish 2- Rising 10th-12th Grade

Spanish 2 instructs students with the goal to continue building on oral and written communication studied in Level 1 Spanish.  Communication will be enhanced and developed through greater use of Spanish in the classroom, cooperative learning activities, listening, writing and reading exercises, and oral presentations.  Additionally, students will appreciate the relevance and influence of music, geography, and culture to the Spanish language.
