Scientists at Stanford University’s School of Medicine are keeping a close eye on Monarch student-athletes. AMHS is one of just three high schools partnering with researchers who will study the impact of concussions on football players at the high school, college, and NFL levels to better understand how to prevent risky collisions. Congratulations to the Robotics Team, which was part of the winning alliance of teams that emerged champions of the Western Regional Robotics Forum’s CalGames in early October. The competition gives students from across Northern California a chance to learn about robotics design, development, and programming. The Monarchs competed against 36 teams for the top prize.
In late-September, students participating in the Interact Club and Mitty Advocacy Project organized a voter registration drive on campus. These Monarchs ran tables where students could register to vote or pre-registrar so that they would be able to vote as soon as they turn 18 years old. Nice work, Monarchs!
Congratulations to the Speech and Debate team for placing first out of 146 schools at the Long Beach Invitational for the second year in a row. Seniors Devin Makhni and Vedant Vamshidhar reached the final round in parliamentary debate while juniors Naman Dandia and Daniel Edmunds and senior Eshan Gupta were named tournament champions in their events. Great job, Monarchs!
Congratulations to the ten Monarch seniors who were named scholars by the National Hispanic Recognition Program: Nicole Berrera, Ricardo Cerrato, Alora Cizneros, Samantha Dhanani, Anthony Formosa, Elisa Horta, Avni Joglekar, Lucas Sant’Anna, Timon Sun, and Maya Venkat. These students received top scores on the PSAT, scoring in the top 2.5 percent of Hispanic and Latino students in the region. Great job, Monarchs!
Congratulations to the Monarchs who were named National Merit Scholar semifinalists this month. These Monarchs were honored based on their scores on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which was taken by about 1.6 million high school juniors last year. Congratulations to the Performing Arts Department, which scored 17 nominations for National Youth Theater awards and took home eight top honors, including Outstanding Production for “One Man, Two Guvnors.” Among the students recognized in the national contest was senior Conor Sherry, for outstanding lead performance, and senior Shanaya Sales, for outstanding supporting performance. Seniors Anvee Bhutani and Ishaan Nandwani grew up speaking multiple languages and now they’re teaching elementary school students to do the same. Since founding Legato Lingua, a nonprofit organization that aims to teach foreign languages to Bay Area children, they’ve teamed up to help more than 400 children through free eight-week training classes in Hindi, Spanish, and French. Congratulations to Monarch Hannah Edwards, who was part of Great Britain's U19 and U22 softball teams this summer. This Monarch is a dual citizen of Great Britain and the United States and was a key contributor on the mound and the plate. Congratulations, Hannah!
Congratulations to senior Haley Jones, who won the FIBA World Cup with the USA U17 Team in July. Haley was also named to the All-Star World Team, an honor that recognizes her as one of the best high school basketball players in the world.
